CASA DOS BICOS - JOSÉ SARAMAGO FOUNDATION

 
DESCRIPTION:
 
Building that Brás de Albuquerque, the son of the Viceroy of India, Afonso de Albuquerque, ordered the construction in 1523, after a trip to Italy, inspired by the Palace of Diamonds, in Ferrara, is from June 2012 headquarters of José Saramago Foundation.
 
The Foundation intends that this emblematic building is a public space, there are celebrated exhibitions, concerts, conferences, courses, seminars, a place at the service of culture as well the promoting and study of the literary work of José Saramago.
 
The House is open to the public, thereby ending a long period in which neither the people of Lisbon or tourists could not enjoy the vestiges of past times on the ground floor (free access): a set of structures dating back to the first occupation of the area, a important section of the Ferdinand wall, the Romans reservoirs (cetárias) with a quadrangular base, intended for salting and conserving of fish (the famous garum) and the remains of Moorish wall.
